Q&A: Get to Know Simon

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the label and packaging industry — and at CERM, innovation is already becoming part of daily operations. During his internship at CERM, Simon Stijnen has been working hands-on with AI-powered solutions designed to automate workflows and improve business processes for label and packaging companies
.

Q1: What’s your role at CERM, and what do you love about it?

Simon: My name is Simon, and I’m an intern at CERM. I’m currently working on the Lexis project as part of my studies in Applied Computer Science.

What I love most about working at CERM is getting to work with AI in a very hands-on and meaningful way. It doesn’t feel like busy work — it feels like I’m actually building something that can make a real difference. That’s something I really enjoy.

Q2: What does a typical day at CERM look like for you?

Simon: Every day usually starts with the daily stand-up meeting. After that, it’s a mix of picking up issues, building new features, and finding time in between to work on my thesis as well. So most days involve a bit of multitasking. There’s always something happening, which keeps things interesting.

Q3: What’s one project you’re especially proud of?

Simon: Definitely the Lexis project. We built an AI system that reads business data from emails and automatically submits it into the CERM software. What’s really exciting is that we managed to get it into production in just six weeks. My internship isn’t even over yet, and we’re already working with real customers using the system — which honestly still feels pretty wild to me.

Q4: What’s something your colleagues might not know about you?

Simon: Besides being an intern at CERM from February until June this year and writing my thesis on how AI is used during the software development process, I also play ice hockey after hours. I've been playing for more than six years now, so balancing AI projects during the day and hockey in the evenings keeps life pretty busy.

Q5: What makes working at CERM great?

Simon: Honestly, the colleagues. Everyone is super approachable, and I can walk up to anyone to ask questions without it ever feeling awkward. On top of that, everyone here is really excited about AI — and so am I — which makes working on these projects even more exciting every day.
